How to Prepare Your House for Interior Painting
Posted on August 30, 2021
One of the most important aspects of interior painting is that you are prepared for the painting crew to move through your home – you know what works best for you and your family! While we make every effort imaginable to ensure things go smoothly, there are also several simple rules that you can follow prior to the arrival of our crew that will make the process as seamless and pleasant as possible for everyone involved. Check out the list below, and if you have any questions, feel free to get in contact with the CertaPro Painters® of Plano, TX office at any time!
Know your final color choices.
It is important you have a final decision for your paint colors before the crew arrives. If possible, please email it to us one week prior to the job start date. Unsure of what to choose? We offer color consultation services!
Remove Small and Fragile Objects
While we make every effort possible to conduct the job carefully and delicately, removing fragile and valuable objects from any room being painted is the safest bet for any project. China cabinets especially need to be emptied and the china placed away from the work areas.
Remove Delicate Furniture
We will cover and protect the furniture and floors, but if there is a delicate piece of furniture, a heirloom that is tricky to move, or a piece that requires disassembly, please remove it or disassemble it before we arrive. As with any smaller valuables, this is the safest bet to prevent damage to these items.
Empty Bookcases
Bookcases should be cleared out if they’re against a wall that we’ll be painting. It could be as simple as placing the books on a sofa or chair that we will be covering anyway. Just make sure if we have to move the furniture that it is not too heavy, or that you have notified us we will need extra help moving the furniture.
Remove Objects from Walls
Pictures, paintings, posters and mirrors should be removed from any walls that need to be painted. If any of these items are going back in the same place, you can safely leave the hardware on the wall. If you intend on moving them elsewhere, remove the hardware and our team can easily fill the holes during the job.
Turn Off and Unplug Electronic Items
If practical, moving these objects elsewhere during the job is the optimal solution. Any electrical outlets or other utility ports will be covered up by our team to avoid damage.
Other Things to Consider
Painting Order of Rooms
Think through the order you would like us moving through your home. We start and finish a room as quickly as possible, and do not need access to every room every day, but some rooms may remain out of service overnight or longer.
Have “Flex Rooms”
Rooms such as hallways, stairwells, powder rooms, and guest rooms make good “flex rooms” – which is to say that we can start these when we get ahead of ourselves and can work on them anytime with minimal disruption to you.
We Primarily Use Latex Paints
Most of the products we use are water-based acrylic latex. The odor is low and dissipates quickly, but it may bother some people some times. People with a strong sensitivity to paint should plan to sleep in another room the night their room is painted. We encourage you to discuss this further with our team prior to the job if you have any concerns.
Repairs Add to Service Time
Rooms that require extensive repairs may be out of service longer than one or two days depending upon drying time of the repair products.
Specialized Projects
Some specialized projects like wallpaper removal, texturing and faux finishing may require multiple visits to complete, and those rooms may stay out of use longer.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our office (972-208-8500) prior to the start date so we can address any issues in advance, if possible.
