How to Paint Exterior Trim, Fascia and Doors

Refreshing the outside of your house is a big undertaking. Because the fascia, door, and door frame take the most abuse from fingers and the elements, they get the most dinged up. Sometimes you can make your exterior paint job last a few years longer by updating the painting in these areas. Here’s how to paint exterior trim, fascia, and doors. For these projects, a 2”-2 1/2” nylon or polyester brush is recommended along with rollers. Working in the shade, move around the house as the sun moves. Only paint when temperatures are between 50º-90º F.

Fascia

For fascia, make sure your fascia is clean and dry. If there is any dirt or grime, take a pressure washer to it. Give ample time to dry, especially if it’s wood.

Begin the painting process by pouring the mixed paint into a bucket. Using a quality brush, load it halfway.

Cut into the edge of the roofline with your brush creating an even line. Then use your roller to paint the fascia board beginning at the upper corner.

After the board is painted, use your roller to paint the bottom of the board. For best and lasting results, repeat with another coat.

Door

To give your door a facelift, begin with a brush loaded halfway. Paint the edges of the door around the border. If you are using a roller, switch now, though the whole door can be painted with the brush.

Use a smooth motion painting the door with either tool. This will avoid unwanted texture. Keep drips to a minimum by reloading the brush only when necessary and tap the excess off on the inside wall of the bucket.

For paneled doors and frames, paint around the recessed area of the panel. Start at the corner and continue around it. It’s best to start at the top and work down. Catch drips as they happen. Do not paint on an area that has been painted for several minutes or you could disrupt the finish.

Door Frame

Begin working on the inside of the door frame. At the top, dip your brush into the paint, scrape extra off and begin painting. You will have to reload more often and work with less paint at a time to avoid dripping.

Door Trim

Begin with the top corner of the door trim. Paint along the side edge where the trim meets the wall. Do all of the outsides of the trim before moving on.

Once the outside is done, go back to the top corner and paint the face. Continue until the door frame is complete.
