Posted on September 17, 2019

While there are ways to paint your home the right way, there are tips to make the job a bit easier. The advice in this post includes quick and dirty tricks that have their flows, but will get your house painted in an efficient manner. Here are 8 tips that make paint a house faster and easier.

Color Choice

When you change the color of your house, you make more work. When you choose the same shade for a paint job, you do not need to be as meticulous with cutting in and edges. It will add coverage to thin areas and still look fresh, without the detailed pieces needing as much attention.

Washing

Some professionals offer this as an alternative to a full pressure wash: use an old t-shirt and rub the walls down. It will pull off major dirt and oodles of dust. Dust and dirt must be removed or the paint will not adhere to the house. If you can get a pressure washer, you will get a better outcome. That being said, you can get nearly the same results with a hose and high pressure nozzle. While you’re spraying, try to knock down leaves, wasp’s nests and spiderwebs now. They will only hinder further steps.

Problem AreasStucco Repair

While primer is suggested for longevity on the house, it’s not necessary on homes that have been previously painted. Use primer on areas you have repaired or used new wood or filler on. It will help hide the repairs under the paint.

Prep Timepainting prep materials

Most experts say you should spend ⅔ of your job time in the preparation of it. Taping and covering areas you don’t want painted will take time, however, it will save you clean up in the long run. This is one area where putting in the time will change the outcome of the house.

Scrape Minimally

Scraping is an important step in preparation. It will keep your new paint from flaking off more quickly. Taking off what seems like one little area can quickly unravel a big mess of scraping. If the peeling is small, the new paint will help the edges lay flat. Larger areas will be noticeable under the new coating of paint thought.

Roll Flatpaint your walls

Rolling paint onto your house is the fastest way to cover a lot of area quickly. The paint will roll on thick enough to potentially get away with one coat. The paint will also seal down areas of problems.

Spray

Spraying large expanses of walls will get the house painted quickly. You must weigh the amount of preparation that is required for spray. Overspray is a real issue and can cause a mess on surrounding plants, cars and features. You’ll need to spend quite a lot of time looking at wind and areas that could be impacted, then covering them.

Clean up

Buying inexpensive rollers and brushes are rarely recommended. Buy cheaper so that tossing them at the end of the job is a good option. Rinse the brush or roller under running water before you start to remove the loose bristles and fuzz before you dip it in paint. This will minimize the amount of debris left behind by the brush in your coating.
