What You Need to Know About Painting Vinyl Siding

Posted on October 31, 2019

Many homeowners don’t know that vinyl siding can be painted. As long as the right paint and colour are used on it, vinyl siding can look brand new again without having to replace it. If you have vinyl siding on your home, consider the following benefits in having it painted.

Benefits of Vinyl Siding Painting

  • Painting vinyl siding can improve its durability.
  • Vinyl siding painting is less labor-intensive than painting other types of exteriors, such as wood.
  • Siding doesn’t retain moisture, which means it dries quickly and can be cleaned easily.
  • Painting vinyl siding is less expensive than replacing it.
  • Painting can bring old, faded siding back to life.
  • New paint can increase the value of your home.
  • Vinyl siding painting can enhance curb appeal.

As you can see, there are many reasons you should consider reaching out to us for painting services for vinyl paint. Of course, you may wonder if you can do it yourself. We don’t recommend it, and it’s not only because we’re in the business of selling our painting services. It’s because you must follow particular steps when painting vinyl siding and if you don’t, it may not come out as well as you would like.

Vinyl Siding Painting Steps

Step #1: Cleaning

The surface must be cleaned completely. This can be done by hand scrubbing or with a pressure washing. CertaPro Painters® of Calgary North offers pressure washing or power washing services and it is included in the painting services offered for vinyl siding.

If the vinyl has been previously painted, it’s important to remove any loose paint with the power washing or feather sanding it off completely. This will ensure the results look smooth and beautiful.

Step #2: Primer

The only time primer should be used is in areas where the siding is pitted or porous. Be sure to not use primer if it’s not needed.

Step #3: Select the Right Paint

Paint specifically created for vinyl siding is the only one that should be used. The paint must be formulated for optimal performance on vinyl or it simply won’t look good or last long enough for you to be satisfied with the results.

Vinyl siding paint will cover previous colors fully, fill in faded areas, and will be resistant to mildew and extreme temperatures.

When selecting the color, be sure you choose a paint color that absorbs heat. There are many shades available from lighter to darker hues, so be sure to look them over and then ask a professional painter which ones would look best on your home.

Maintaining Vinyl Painting

After having your vinyl painted, the best way to keep it looking nice for a long time is to have it power washed every spring. This will remove dirt, dust, and elements that can quickly affect the color and durability of the siding.
