Shiplap Removal in Aurora
As a new homeowner, sometimes you’ll find that the prior owner’s tastes don’t quite match
yours, and a change is needed. This could be a color change necessitating the painting
of walls and trim, adding an accent wall, or in this case, the removal of wooden shiplap
(wooden wall covering) from a wall. Here’s an example of what our experts can do to help you meet your home design expectations.
CHALLENGES
Certapro Painters of Oswego/Aurora/Yorkville was contacted by a client who recently purchased a home that wanted to update interior finishes to better reflect their personal style. A significant obstacle was a wood shiplap accent wall that did not fit their design vision. Upon inspection, we found that the shiplap had been glued directly to the drywall, complicating the removal process. As expected, removal damaged the drywall surface, stripping away the top paper and exposing the gypsum core beneath. This posed an additional challenge: exposed gypsum cannot accept moisture-based products without bubbling or degradation. Our crew needed a professional solution to properly restore the surface for painting.
CONDITIONS
The wall had been fully covered in wood shiplap, secured with adhesive. Upon removal, the adhesive pulled away the drywall’s top layer, exposing sensitive gypsum material. This condition required specialized treatment before any new surface coatings could be applied. The homeowner selected Sherwin-Williams Cashmere interior paint in an eggshell finish for a smooth, contemporary look.
PROJECT INVOLVEMENT
After removing the shiplap, our crew carefully sanded the affected wall to create a uniform surface. To properly treat the exposed gypsum, we applied Zinsser® Gardz® Problem Surface Sealer, a water-based solution designed to seal compromised drywall. Once sealed, we skim-coated the wall with plaster to rebuild a smooth finish. After sanding and final surface preparation, the wall was primed and top coated using Sherwin-Williams Cashmere paint in an eggshell sheen, delivering a durable and elegant final appearance.
