Meadowhawk Lodge in Yorkville

Meadowhawk Lodge, located in Yorkville, Illinois and is used as a event and education center within the Hoover Forest Preserve. The preserve is located on the banks of the Fox River. The lodge itself sit at the edge of a large open prairie and leads to connecting nature trails. The lodge exterior siding is comprised of approximately 3,000 square feet of cedar shingles, which complement the prairie setting of the preserve.

The cedar shingles of the lodge had not been stained since the building had been built, approximately 20 years earlier. Despite the age, the shingles did not require replacement; however considerable mold had accumulated on the north face of the building, and in other areas, the original stain had completely broken down, exposing the underlying cedar substrate.

Prior to staining, the building was power washed using a environmentally safe non-phosphate cleaner. Due to the existence of high concentrations of mold, particularity on the north face, hand scrubbing was required. Around windows and doors, due to age and exposure, the existing caulk shrank exposing gaps which needed to be cut out and re-caulked.  Around the pergola bases, caulking was also necessary to fill gaps.

Due to the exposure to the sun, over time, paint on the south entrance steel doors broke down to the point, tape used for masking peeled the paint off. Though the doors were not included in the original proposal, CertaPro repainted the doors at no additional charge to the customer.

In order to avoid any logistical issues, CertaPro kept an enclosed trailer at Hoover Preserve to store paint, tools and materials.

Due to the use of stain, it was important to finish this project before cool late autumn temperatures. The use of Quad OSI, which can be used at temperatures down to zero degrees also avoided any application issues due to cold.

CHALLENGES:

Due to sun exposure over time, paint on the south entrance steel doors broke down to the point that tape used for masking peeled the paint off. Though the doors were not included in the original proposal, CertaPro repainted the doors at no additional charge to the customer.

CONDITIONS:

The cedar shingles of the lodge had not been stained since the building had been built approximately 20 years earlier. Despite the age, the shingles did not require replacement; however, considerable mold had accumulated on the north face of the building and in other areas, so the original stain had completely broken down, exposing the underlying cedar substrate.
