How You Can Prevent Your Clapboard Siding From Peeling

Posted on November 8, 2022

This is an extremely common question to ask when it comes to your home’s exterior, but the answer isn’t so simple.

Clapboard tends to be a big concern when it comes to repainting your home, especially if the clapboard has been painted on multiple times already. Several coats of oil-based paint as well as the filling of the gaps between the boards doesn’t allow the wood to breath nor allows any moisture to escape from between the boards. This combination can lead to the paint or your clapboard peeling when your home “sweats”. Your house naturally generates moisture, which needs to escape somehow. Unfortunately, one of the ways in which is escapes is by trying to push the paint off of your clapboard.

There are many solutions to keep your clapboard from peeling. Here are a couple things your professional painter can try:

  • Scrape, sand, and recoat any vulnerable areas as soon as the paint in those areas begin to peel
  • Apply a water-repellant to the bare wood
  • Apply a primer to the wood before you paint
  • Make sure the conditions outside are good for painting
