Which of these Six Coastal Styles is Your Favorite?

In Northwest Florida, the beach is always calling. It is the premier backdrop, the perfect getaway, and the ideal weekend destination whether you are a resident or a tourist. Owning a property along the coast is a privilege, and decorating is a delight; however, there are several distinct types of coastal styles from which to choose.

Coastal Styles:

  1. Modern Coastal- Another name for this style is a sea cottage look. This style has a very open and airy feel. Mostly whites, light beiges, and grays are recommended. Furniture is often natural wood in light finishes which is distressed to look weathered by salt and sand. Window coverings might be thin linen drapes that flow in the breeze.
  2. Boho/ Farmhouse- These two can be mixed and matched with just a few simple changes here and there. For example, a macrame wall hanging and eclectic art piece can be switched around with wood bead garlands, glass jars with seashells, and string lights to change the effect. This look is similar to modern coastal but has more details that fit a certain vibe. Soft blues, peaches, pinks, and greens work well. Natural fibers like jute, bamboo, cotton, and linen are best. Also, natural wood will create the feel of bringing the outdoors inside.
  3. Tropical- If you love bold, bright colors and patterns, tropical coastal might be your best fit. Think of the tropics, the bright, bold colors of the fauna and foliage (greens, blues, pinks, and oranges). Vivid accent walls in rooms and furniture with leafy patterns are a hit! Be careful not to overdo it, but have fun decorating. Shoot for neutrals as your background color, and add dashes of bold color.
  4. “Old World coastal”- This style originates from all along the Mediterranean coasts. Think stucco, wrought iron, and beautiful landscaping. Paint colors in this style are richer and warmer, like soft mustard and terra cotta. Furniture and decor will remind guests of home because of the coziness and charm. Old world coastal is elegant but comfy.
  5. Nautical- You don’t have to own watercraft to love this decor. Crisp, clean lines and sharp contrasts play up your walls and highlight furniture. Natural darker wood stands out with bold reds against navy and white. Accents of cornflower and azure blue brighten any room. Children and grandchildren’s rooms can easily break into playful individualized expressions while tying into your coastal theme.
