Should I Hire Professionals in Destin to Remove Wallpaper?
The weather in Destin has been in the mid-’80s lately, and before it gets much warmer, it is time to consider getting your painting project’s completed. Though you know the reasons to remove wallpaper, you have started to wonder how much work goes into the actual process. Nothing matches it, and the peeling edges are just a nightmare when you notice it again, for the hundredth time, so you’ve decided now is the time. You are confident in your DIY abilities, but you may want to consider hiring a professional for your wallpaper removal. Hiring a professional will leave you with more time to relax at the beach or get out on the golf course.
Depending on the method you wish to use to remove wallpaper, you’re still going to need some supplies, time, effort, and not to mention plenty of patience. Rushing any step of this process will result in frustration and additional expenses if the drywall underneath the wallpaper gets damaged. That is also considering that years of moisture and or previous unseen damage isn’t lurking beneath.
Removing Wallpaper from your Destin Home
Before you begin, do not forget to get your supplies ready beforehand, set up some form of protection for your flooring and furniture, and finally, what you will do with all the wallpaper. One trash bin may not be enough.
Method 1: Scoring, Soaking, and Scraping
The method that will cost the least for wallpaper removal is the Scoring, Soaking, and Scraping method. Though least expensive, it will undoubtedly be the most time-consuming. Do you want to spend all of your time removing wallpaper? I prefer spending my free time out enjoying the beautiful sunshine and palm trees.
Steps:
- You will need to move in circular motions with a wallpaper scoring tool to pierce through the covering. I hope you haven’t done your arm day workout today because you’ll be at this for a while. Do not press too hard, or you’ll damage the drywall underneath, adding more work to this already daunting job. You will need a deeper perforating tool for professionally applied wallpaper or vinyl coverings.
- Now that one wall has been scored, and your muscles have had their workout, you’ll need to take a spray bottle and spray down a section of the wall. If you are using an adhesive remover, vinegar-hot-water solution, or just hot water, your results will vary on how long you will need to wait before starting to work. Generally, 15 minutes is recommended before progressing forward.
- Then you scrape. A good tool for this part is a must because this will be the most sensitive part of the process. Starting too early, you’ll tear the wallpaper from the wall, taking chunks of drywall with it. Waiting too long (don’t spend too much time rewatching DIY videos!), you’ll have to respray the area and wait before you can start working once more.
- Repeat, repeat, repeat.
Did I mention this process is time-consuming? Estimates are varied, but you can commit a minimum of 6 hours alone for a small room. An average-sized room can take 1-3 days. No beach time or fun outdoor activities for you.
Method 2: Steaming!
Though pricier, utilizing a steamer can be more effective at getting under the wallpaper and loosening the adhesive to scrape it away.
Steps:
- Revisit step 1 above. You’ll still be scoring and working those muscles!
- Whether you rent a steamer from your local hardware store or purchase one from an online marketplace giant, you’ll need to have it ready. While the steamer with appropriate attachments is warming up, find every fan in your house and point it to the area you will be working.
- Place the steamer over the area you will be working in, hold it firmly against the wall and wait.
- After 15-30 seconds, begin scraping the wallpaper from the wall, careful not to burn yourself with the steamer.
- Repeat.
This option will allow you to get out on your kayak much sooner since using a steamer will take less time, as you’ll quickly be able to remove large sheets of wallpaper. It does come with the added danger of burning yourself with a hot element or turning your room into a sauna (hence the fans from step 2).
