Painting On Brick: All About Tools And Technique

Posted on October 1, 2021

Brick walls and other masonry-produced surfaces are sturdy, strong, and very long-lasting, but sometimes, they can look a bit dull, so adding color through paint is a great idea to bring it to life.

Having a rather coarse surface, very different from the smoothness you might find in other materials such as wood and drywall. This means that it will take a greater effort and more paint to cover a brick wall.

Then, you must make sure the bricks are in good condition. Brick that’s chipping, deteriorating, molding, or in overall poor condition is always a bad candidate for paint. Paint blocks the natural pores in the brick’s surface, which can cause existing problems to become exaggerated over time.

When choosing a paint suitable for bricks, use a mineral-based paint or silicate paint that’s designed to be breathable, so it doesn’t end up retaining moisture.

A coat of paint can give a layer of protection to the brick, as long as you remember that once you paint the brick, it will need to be repainted every few years to maintain an effective level of protection.

Depending on the paint’s quality and the actual coarseness of the brick’s surface, it may take one to two coats to cover the brick, using a brush or roller. It might be quite some work, indeed.
