Color Consulting FAQ: What color should I paint my Northwest Florida garage door?

Posted on May 10, 2023

Here in Northwest Florida, with the sun’s rays and weathering, homeowners can expect to need to repaint a garage door about every five years to keep it looking in top condition. The prep work, including sanding and priming, will need to be done beforehand. A big decision that needs to be made is what color best fits the look of the home’s exterior. Updating your home’s aesthetic can be as simple as a few changes to the hue added to a garage door, the front door, and shutters. It can add value, look more modern, and increase curb appeal.

Factors to consider when choosing a garage door color:

  1. Do I want the garage door to stand out? A bolder color will create this effect. Using black when you’ve got black shudders, for example, will create a uniform look that speaks sophistication and elegance.  Or, if your home’s trim includes lighter colored trim like white or gray on windows, doors, and shudders, painting the garage door the same light shade will look excellent.
  2. Do I want the garage door to blend in with the exterior?  If you would rather the door almost not be noticeable because you are trying to accentuate a red door or other accents, simply paint the garage door the same shade as your exterior paint color. The garage door will nearly fade into the background.
  3. Are you still not sure? Online software tools are available to help you “see” different colors on your home before you commit to any shade of paint.
