How to Repair Stucco Cracks in your Northwest Florida Home
Posted on March 28, 2023
Regardless of how old or new your Northwest Florida home is, you’ll need to perform maintenance. Learn how to repair stucco cracks to save yourself time and money.
Stucco is a durable building material used in place of siding for many Destin and Panama City Beach homes because of its resistance to rot, mold, fire, termites, and more. Despite its strength, stucco can still crack due to seasonal changes or the house settling. Your home becomes more vulnerable to water damage and energy loss when this happens. At CertaPro Painters® of Northwest Florida, our stucco repair contractors can help you learn how to repair stucco cracks in three steps to keep your home protected.
Clean the Area
No matter what you’re trying to repair, it’s always a good idea to clean the area before you get started. Even a small area of damaged stucco can have pieces of dirt, sticks, stucco chips, or other debris lodged inside the crack. Be careful while pulling out the debris, as you don’t want to cause damage to the area inside the stucco crack. A putty knife, scratch awl, or another narrow and sharp tool can be effective at removing debris and preparing the area for repair. An essential part of repairing stucco cracks is proper cleaning because the cement used to repair the area needs to adhere to the stucco rather than dirt or leaves left in the area.
Fill the Crack
After it’s clean, you can liberally apply stucco patching cement with a putty knife. It’s better to put too much material on the crack as you can always remove it after the application is complete. Too little material can shrink and separate from the edges of established stucco, which means you’ll have to perform the repair again. At CertaPro Painters® of Northwest Florida, we understand not everybody is confident in or knows how to repair stucco, so you can always call our team for your Northwest Florida stucco repair.
Finish and Paint
Once you’ve completely covered the cracked or broken area with your patching cement, use a wire brush to add texture. Ensure the texturing matches the surrounding areas, or it will be easy to see where you’ve patched broken stucco.
Let the patch dry completely and cure as directed by the packaging, then paint over it. Painting will help to make the repair look uniform with the rest of your home, so you don’t have unsightly patches of mismatched stucco. If you don’t have any paint left from when your home was originally painted, don’t hesitate to call a stucco repair company.
