How Often Should You Stain Your Fence

Many staining applications will last an average of 3-4 years. Over time, due to age and weathering your fence may start to chip or peel. If you notice any of these issues, it is time for a restraining service. During this process, your old stain will need to be sanded away for a smooth application of your new stain. The great thing about choosing stain for your fence is that the natural grain of your wood can still show. This can add extra character to this exterior surface. There are also a few different types of stain and finishes that can be applied to your fence.

Transparent/Translucent: This is a popular stain choice for many homeowners and is the most natural-looking option. It can be clear or tinted and is most often used on new fencing.

Semi-transparent/Semi-solid: These products are typically a medium shade of stain and still allow for a bit of natural wood grain to show through. Sometimes these varieties will need a two coat application or sealing the fence with a primer to keep the stain or paint lasting longer.

Solid Stain: A solid stain is very similar to paint. No wood grain will show through when you select a solid stain. Solid stains can also require two coats and they are very durable.
