Color Psychology
Colors can work magic for your psychology, including simple tasks like sleeping. Studies have shown that red increases heart rate, yellow encourages intellectual thoughts and orange energizes. Using the wrong color on your bedroom walls can impact your behavior in more ways than you imagine.
Toned down and muted colors promote better sleep. Data driven studies have been performed to find the best color choices for rest and relaxation. Overwhelmingly, the colors chosen fell within a couple of color families and all were in flat shades. This makes the color appear softer and sleepier.
Top Color for Sleep: Blue!
Blue is calming and works to relax you after a long day. The eyes have receptors in the retina called ganglion cells. This makes your brain really receptive to blue. According to a Travelodge study, those sleeping in blue rooms got an average 7 hours and 52 minutes of sleep. Almost 60% of those guests said they woke up happy.
While blue was the top scorer for bedroom color, it was not the only stand out. If you are ready to sleep but not a fan of blue, here are some other well-scoring options.
Soft Yellow
Those sleeping in soft yellow rooms got about 7 hours and 40 minutes of sleep and awoke happy. Be careful not to choose a bright yellow since it’s found to be stimulating and may make falling asleep hard.
Green
Right behind yellow was green, with participants sleeping for 7 hours and 36 minutes. Since the color is derived from nature, it feels organically relaxing and naturally peaceful. People reported they woke up feeling upbeat when deep greens were used on the walls.
Silver
Silver can work similarly to a neutral with a sense of style to it. It can be conducive for sleep with those resting in it getting 7 hours and 33 minutes of uninterrupted rest. This is a great choice if you’re not ready to step outside the neutral box but want the benefits of color for sleep.
Orange
While orange is typically energizing and exhilarating, it can work in a bedroom. Pick a shade that is muted and relaxing to get 7 hours and 28 minutes of sleep. Adding in undertones can give you a warm and cuddly feeling that is optimal for sleep.
While many colors can be used in a bedroom without hurting your sleep, some should always be avoided. Think hard before you paint your bedroom the following colors. They could net you less than 7 hours of sleep.
Purple
Purple is hands down the worst color to paint a bedroom. It’s mentally stimulating and causes your mind to stay awake with creative thoughts. Those sleeping in purple rooms only got 5 hours and 56 minutes of sleep that was filled with more vivid nightmares.
Gray
So this is the same as silver, right? No. Gray reads as uninspiring and depressing. Guests in gray rooms only slept for 6 hours and 12 minutes a night. The color is cold and uninviting.
Brown
Avoid the doom and gloom that comes with brown. The color is said to increase restlessness and sadness. The color is a sure fire way to avoid sleep altogether.
Red
While red is passionate and energetic, it can also increase your energy and blood pressure. Ideally, it’s not conducive to a night’s sleep. While beautiful, keep red from your bedroom.
