5 Reasons Your Paint Color Looks Wrong (It’s NOT the Lighting)
Posted on May 28, 2019
You walk into your newly painted room, and it’s awful. This cannot be the color you chose and gave to the painters, right? Wrong. Maybe it’s the lighting? Could be. Here are 5 reasons your paint color looks wrong.
1. You chose the wrong undertone.
A green can go quickly from emerald to icky by adding the wrong undertones. An undertone is the color that makes a beige turn red or a grey turn blue. Adding a piece of furniture or a rug to a room with subtle undertones can quickly turn them into overpowering colors.
2. The color doesn’t relate.
Choosing a color that doesn’t show up anywhere else in your room will make it feel out of place or misused. The color on your wall is a backdrop to your room, but according to expert colorists, should be repeated in textiles, accessories or appliances.
3. The color is too muted or too bright for the furnishings or floors.
When choosing a color for your walls, know what look you are going for. If your floors are a colorful carpet or hardwood, it’s a good idea to choose a wall paint that is more muted. The opposite stands true as well. If your floor is white or off white, pick a color to complement the floors, meaning something with more hue. If you aim for a monotone look, choose a version of the color with more pigment to avoid a stark, one color room with no definition.
4. The color is too dark.
Dramatic is in, but technicolor is out. Use your vivid colors sparingly. A navy accent wall or green chair rail is great, a rainbow home is an assault on the eyes. Use the colors in areas that are surrounded by natural light and neutral colors.
5. The room has no look or feel.
If none of the previous issues are plaguing your room, it could be missing a look or feel. Paint alone cannot make a room. Try bringing in a complementary statement piece to give your room an air of style. A simple rug, statement piece of furniture or fun drapes can take your room from bland to fabulous.
