What to Remember When Painting Aluminum and Vinyl Siding

Posted on May 17, 2021

Aluminum and vinyl sidings have become increasingly popular throughout the United States in the last few decades. So popular, in fact, that it is hard to drive down a neighborhood and not see this type of home exterior. There comes a time with every house that uses aluminum and vinyl sidings, though, that an update is absolutely necessary. Most of the time, this is due to simple aging and fading. However, most homeowners are unsure of if they are able to paint their siding exterior and how to go about the process properly.

Our professional painters have helped thousands of homeowners with our aluminum and vinyl sidings services. Over time, we have grown to know all of the tips and tricks. In this article, we’re going to share with you a few of these tips so you can make the magic happen all on your own!

Preparation is Vital

As we say with any painting project, preparation is vital! No paint job will look good if the proper prep work is not completed. With siding, you should check to make sure there are no underlying problems, such as loose pieces, decayed wood, or insect damage. These can all be determined by close inspection. These are all things that must be resolved before moving onto painting. Failure to do so will result in your paint job lasting for a shorter period of time and more costly repairs in the future.

If you get the all-clear on damage, it is time to start moving onto the next steps. Your house will most likely need a power wash. Intense weather can be hard on siding, and you want to make sure you are working with a pristine surface before applying primer or paint (we always recommend priming the surface!).

To Paint or to Replace?

Sometimes, it is better to part ways with your aluminum or vinyl siding. This is especially true if you are planning on living in your home for many years to come. A good siding replacement will last 25 years or longer as long as it is properly maintained. On the other hand, you’ll have to go through the process of repainting your siding every couple of years.

That’s not to say painting aluminum and vinyl siding is without benefits. A good paint job can increase the curb appeal of your house, which can be useful for selling your house or doing short-term improvements. Keep in mind, though, that painting siding will likely void your warranty, will be harder to replace in the future, and is pretty unpredictable.
