CertaPro Painters® of Minnetonka, MN completed this job at a customer’s home in Plymouth, which entailed bringing new life to the kitchen by refinishing the cabinets with a lighter, brighter look.

Kitchen Cabinet Enamel Project - Before the prep work began

Prep Work

Because we were working with wood and eventually applying enamel, extensive prep work was needed to make sure the best possible finish was achieved. This included sanding, priming and some minor repairs on every drawer, door and base cabinet in the kitchen, as well as one window opening.

For the larger gaps between the cabinets, walls and mounting points, caulk was applied to remove unsightly dark lines from the finished product.

Naturally, we also took care to ensure that every surface that wouldn’t be receiving paint was covered and protected from overspray.

Challenges

When working with wood, attention to detail is crucial. As detailed above in “prep work,” special care had to be taken to ensure there were no cracks, dents or scratches remaining anywhere in the wood. If there were, they’d be easily visible on any new coating, especially a white one like we used here.

The Finished Product

The end result was a kitchen that had been truly refreshed. The dark oak shades that had defined the room before were replaced with bright, vibrant hues of white and blue that gave the room a much more welcoming feeling – and more suitably accented the craftsmanship on the cabinets themselves.

Though the original look of these cabinets was dated, the wood beneath was still in good shape – and the customer was thrilled with the money she saved by having us refresh them rather than springing for the purchase and installation of an entirely new set.
