The owners of the Plymouth Ice Center felt that the color scheme and graphics on the walls were dated and showed wear and tear from thousands of hours of use. It was time to give this community staple a fresh new look!

Prep Work

Throughout this project, our team of professional painters provided a range of services for the customer including updating the design and color scheme of the walls. The City wanted our team to give this gathering place a bold, striped pattern on the main walls, and to remove the dated green color from the design entirely.

Laying out the stripes across the walls and insuring that they were lined up proved to be a difficult task. However, with the aid of a laser level, tape measure, and a fittingly old-school chalk line, the team was able to execute this portion of the project perfectly.

Challenges

Painting an ice center didn’t come without its own set of unique challenges! Throughout this project, our team had to employ their expert techniques, utilize a 26′ scissor lift, and brave freezing temperatures.

Two twenty-six foot electric scissor lifts were used throughout the duration of this painting project. Moving the lifts on and off the ice to access all sections of the wall, and then to paint at elevation safely and reliably, was a task that required the varied range of skills our painters can provide!

Challenges (cont.)

The largest challenge that this project presented us with was choosing a paint to use inside the arena given the temperature inside of it. The City was not able to take the ice down due to ongoing facility use, which meant that we had to identify paint products that would perform properly at temperatures near freezing. We conducted performance and adhesion tests with several products from Sherwin-Williams. Ultimately, based on the results, we moved to a product from Benjamin Moore for the dark blue color and Sherwin Williams for the lighter colors. By preparing this way, we could ensure color uniformity and long-term performance in what would be a very demanding environment.
