In July of 2023, CertaPro Painters® of Minnetonka, MN was tasked with rehabilitating one of JH Larson Distribution’s facilities in Plymouth, MN.

Prep Work

This project had several areas of concern that needed to be addressed. The expansion joints between the tilt-up wall sections were cracked and failing. Also, the previous painting contractor did not use the right equipment or techniques to properly paint the concave walls. We started by addressing the damaged expansion joints, and filling the cracks with the appropriate sealant to prevent future water intrusion. We then pressure-washed the entire exterior to remove dirt, debris, and pollen.

Challenges

This project demanded the use of over 200 gallons of paint, along with plenty of heavy equipment that required experienced hands to operate. Having the right tools and machinery for the job is one thing, but staging them correctly to maximize efficiency is a completely different story. Our solution was to use a trailer to keep all of the supplies in one place while we made our way around the facility.

Now with a strategy set in stone, we began coating the building using a powerful gas sprayer capable of powering four paint guns at a time. Each of the wall’s surfaces was concaved, so our standard back-rolling procedure would have been impractical and ineffective. Instead, we alternated between applying the paint horizontally and vertically with each new layer while using an aerial lift to reach higher sections of the walls. With this method, we ensured complete coverage of each surface.

Finished Product

In the end, this distribution center went from frail and faded to fresh and fortified. Only five days prior, the building was stained, and water was able to penetrate the structure. By using the right equipment and creating a detailed project plan with our customers, we were able to complete the project on time and on budget.
