3 Tips to Modernize Your Home

Posted on December 27, 2021

If you are thinking of selling your home, many real estate agents recommend doing some light updating before listing it for sale. Or, perhaps you are just bored with your decor and need a change. Today, we will discuss three ways to update and modernize your home’s look and feel by changing paint colors and adding or removing textures.

Refreshing Colors

In most instances, changing wall colors will have the most dramatic visual effect on the appearance of the home. Depending on when the home was built, it may have outdated, drab colors, or even wallpaper. Refreshing wall colors to complement the home’s interior has never been easier with all of the designer and specialty paints available. In many cases, lightening the color will also make the home seem larger and more open, which according to many realtors, is very inviting.

Update or Add Wall Textures

Texturing walls with specialty paints is one of the most popular projects in modern homeownership. Many paint manufacturers offer their most popular colors in not only standard paint, but in textured versions as well. These textured paints often contain other materials such as sand to give the surface a leathery texture. Other paints, like blackboard paint and glow-in-the-dark paint, are great for kids’ rooms and activity areas. Adding these textures to an otherwise simple surface can breathe new life into old rooms.

Remove Popcorn and Mop Textures From the Ceilings

Few features date a home faster than popcorn and mop textured ceilings. These were all the rage decades ago, but today they often appear tired and outdated. Removing these textures can be difficult, but several companies have introduced both tools and techniques to successfully remove these textures without damaging the surface.

However, this project will likely be very time and labor-intensive, so in some situations, it’s actually more cost-effective to cover it with new drywall. In instances where covering the texture is the prudent decision, many homeowners will choose to update one room at a time. Because this project can be messy, completing one room at a time allows for better control of the mess and keeps the project manageable.
