How To Paint Over Water Stains Feature

Posted on February 12, 2026

How to paint over water stains and leave your walls and ceilings looking good and new.

Vince Scaduto, Owner of CertaPro Painters of Massapequa, NY, was featured in a recent home painting blog post on The Spruce. Vince, along with another painting business owner, weighed in on their tips and solutions for repainting over water stains, which ranged from thoroughly inspecting the drywall for traces of leakage, scraping any loose or cracking paint, to using a primer that effectively blocks potential bleed-through, and more. Here’s what Vince had to say:

“In some cases, you’ll need more than one coat of paint to properly cover the water stain. And depending on the age of the surrounding paint, it may be best to repaint the entire area so that you don’t have a single patch of new paint surrounded by old, faded paint.”

As a team, we are dedicated to finding the latest and best solutions for all painting challenges, ensuring our customers a seamless painting experience.
