6 Tips to Get Great Results for Your House Painting Project

Bringing your house back to life with fresh paint is extremely satisfying and affordable when compared to other house projects. For a job well done that will last for many years to come, follow some of these simple guidelines.

1. Use High Quality Materialspainting tools

You may want to save money on some low-end paint, but don’t do it. You will save yourself trouble in the long run by investing in paint that comes with a warranty and will hold up over the years. Flat finish is best for covering imperfections on siding, while satin and semi-gloss work well for bringing out the trim and are easier to clean.

2. Preparation is very important

Take the time to clean your surfaces by pressure washing, sanding, and scraping. This process may seem tedious, but it is absolutely necessary for an optimal end result. You want to remove old paint that is peeling and flaking and work over the surface with a power sander. It is important to smooth over the surface, so it is nice and even for applying your primer.

3. Apply two coats at minimum

In addition to primer, it is important to apply at least two coats of paint. Additional coats can be applied for desired color saturation. Primer will help to even out the surface and cover imperfections. Primers can be tinted toward or against the finish depending on the desired effect. The more the paint color is changing, the more coats you will likely need, some colors (like red) are notorious for needing more coats.

4. Use the right tools & equipment

A solid brush and roller will go a long way on their own. Airless sprayers are efficient but can be tricky with limited experience. Remember to use a bucket and strainer. Don’t forget to wear a mask and make sure that you have covered up areas you don’t want getting paint on them. If you need to use a ladder, make sure it is firmly planted with both legs on the ground and pressed firmly against the wall.

5. Timing is Everything

You will want to plan your project with the weather forecast. Aiming for 70 degrees with 50% humidity is recommended. Staying withing 60 to 80 degrees is ideal. The heat, humidity, and direct sunlight will ruin your paint job and cause the paint to dry too fast. You want to avoid the rain and moisture from humidity as well as both will interfere with your fresh paint.

6. Use the Right Technique

Paint from top to bottom. Make sure you have taped off the trim around doors and windows. Read up on how to apply technique for maximum effectiveness. Go back over to touch up areas that need extra paint.
