White painted cabinets, a project completed by our team in Indianapolis.

Last year we saw an increase of kitchen cabinet painting and refinishing projects in Indianapolis. People are spending more time in their homes and thinking of ways to make improvements, with kitchen projects being one of the most popular options. Replacing kitchen cabinets can be very expensive, homeowners with quality cabinet builds with outdated colors have an option to refinish the cabinets at a fraction of the cost.

Cabinet restoration projects have a fair bit of nuance to them that is learned as a trade, its not an easy project to do yourself and not run into issues. For this reason, its advisable to hire a local professional for the project, the cost of your project can vary depending on how many cabinets, they type of wood, if hardware is being replaced, and more. We have a basic cabinet painting cost guide available if you are interested in ballpark prices in Indianapolis.

Here are the basic steps you can expect to see on a cabinet project:

Removal of doors & drawers

A team will come in and remove doors, drawers and shelves. Any necessary carpentry and cutting of new pieces will be done now. The doors are much easier to prep when not attached to the cabinet. We may bring the doors and drawers off-site to another area to work on them.

Preparation

The cabinets will be sanded and cleaned. Contact paper or other adhesions will be removed. If the cabinets have any dings or dents we will smooth them out during this step.

Priming

Cabinets should be primed with a high-quality cabinet grade primer. Make sure you cover the entire surface with primer to create a good bond.

Base

You will need to get a specialty paint designed for cabinetry work. The paint is extremely high quality and can withstand the knocks and bangs a kitchen cabinet might take daily. It’s more durable than other paints on the market.

Top

Protective topcoat is applied. Again, because kitchen cabinets are used often and harshly, a top coat will save your paint from chipping and cracking making a durable finish.

Top Colors for Cabinet Painting Projects in Indianapolis:

  • White – Most popular option over the last few years
  • Slate Gray – Darker grays with matte finishes have also been a top pick
  • Light Green – Lighter shades of forest green have been a new emerging color trend.
