Renovate an Unfinished Basement
Posted on November 23, 2020
Every basement has the potential to be another cozy space for you and your loved ones to gather and relax. If you see potential in the lower level of your home but aren’t sure how to even begin the process of re-finishing it, you’re not alone. However, taking the time to take on this project will definitely be worth it. Keep reading for some tips on how to renovate an unfinished basement.
Plan
Plan out how you want the space to look.
First, you need to start with a vision this helps to move the process along and know exactly where you will need things to go.
Tips ->
You want to put the main gathering area in the spot that gets the most natural light. This will make the basement feel homier.
You can put the t in a spot that does not draw in as much if any natural light. This will reduce glare and almost make it feel like a theatre.
Have a spot for snacks and drinks. You will want this in a spot where you don’t have to cross over the tv to access it.
Repairs
Do you need to do any repairs or renovations?
Next, it’s time to asses anything that may need to be addressed before you start the fun step of decorating it.
Tips ->
Test for moisture. You can do this by taping plastic sheets to the floor and walls and wait a couple weeks to see if condensation forms. This will indicate you need dehumidifiers.
Check for carbon monoxide and make sure you have proper ventilation in this space.
Get a second sump pump. This is crucial in case the first one gives out, and that happens more often than you would think.
Seal any cracks or gaps around the basement.
Waterproof by installing diverters to send water away from the home. Also, slope soil away from the foundation.
Insulate Pipes.
Check for mold.
