Different Types of Deck Stain
Posted on September 2, 2021
Even though staining a deck might seem straightforward, there are a few more options to consider than you might think. With all varieties of patio and deck space in the Gilbert/Queencreek area it’s important to select the proper stain for your specific outdoor space. In this post, we are going to go over different types of deck stain for all types of needs.
- Clear or Transparent – this type of stain is your basic clear stain. It does allow for a transparent layer to go over the deck and allow the wood grain to show through. If you’re looking for a natural wooden look, this might be the best option. However, because it’s usually thin and transparent it does not offer the best UV protection. It does seal out water and moisture but you will need to reapply this type of stain annually.
- Semi Transparent – A popular choice among homeowners. Semi-transparent stain does have some pigments added to it but you can still see the wood grain underneath. It seals like clear stain and offers more protection from UV rays due to the pigments. It comes in different shades and lasts longer than clear stain. You’ll still want to look out for chips or peeling and refresh the coats every few years.
- Solid Stain – solid stain mimics the look of paint. It has the most pigments and is the most uniform. It provides a layer of protection because it doesn’t seep into the wood grain and sits on top like paint. This stain is chosen usually to cover any discoloration in the wood. It is the most prone to peeling, chipping and cracking and will need to be re-stained as it goes through wear and tear.
- Oil Based – Just as the name suggests, these types of stain have oils added into them. The added advantage of these stains is that they soak into the wood and last relatively long. They are also easy to maintain because you just need to reapply touch ups as needed. The offer protection against the elements but make sure you choose the right oil for your type of wood.
- Water Based – A durable and environmentally friendly option, water-based stains do last a long time and only need refreshed every three years or so. They don’t penetrate the wood as well but still offer some protection. The maintenance is a little tricky as you’ll have to remove all the previous stain before applying a new coat.
- Epoxy Added – A more modern option, epoxy stains have added epoxy in them and it makes them more durable and increases longevity. They are formulated to have a deep sheen like oil based but they are harder to remove like water based. You’ll have to remove all the epoxy stain before applying new coats. Fortunately, you’ll only have to do this every few years.
