From our Pros: Consider House Painting for Fall

Posted on September 28, 2020

Summer is wrapping up. You might be staring at damage and fading on your exterior of your home. Traditionally painting season is thought to be summer but don’t worry. Our pros explain why you should consider house painting for fall.

Temperatures

For lasting results, temperatures during painting exteriors are suggested to be above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, at the time of painting. Some paints on the market are made to provide good results outside of this window, but there are drawbacks to working in hot or cold temperatures. Hot summer days affect the viscosity of the paint making it thinner and requiring more coatings for full coverage. Crews will require more breaks to stay healthy working in heat. Direct sun can also make the paint dry too quickly causing faster paint failure. Since the temperatures have dropped, you won’t worry about any of these issues.

Humidity

Second to heat, humidity can cause a bit of turmoil with your paint. High humidity levels can ruin finishes and make a mess of your home. The water in the air makes it very difficult for the paint to dry effectively. This traps moisture in your stucco or wood home and can cause major damage beneath the paint. Dry times are extended a considerable amount during humid summer days. Working with drier air helps work to dry in a natural way, creating a paint film that will protect the work in a reasonable amount of time.

Labor

Lower temperatures and humidity allow the crews to work more efficiently. Less time on job means lower costs. Pros are able to work through some heat, but temperatures can cause heat related illnesses slowing down progress.

Hiring crews in the autumn, since it’s not traditionally thought of as painting season, is typically a bit easier. Painters are less busy during what they consider off-season, but still can easily finish exteriors before the truly cold air arrives. There will be far less lag between estimates and work starting.

Holidays

IF you are hosting holiday events, you know it’s a lot of pressure. Spruce up your home just before the holidays to create a beautiful backdrop for meals and decor with fresh paint. Your home will have a crisp freshness to it. Beyond exteriors and common areas, consider updating the bathrooms and guestrooms for a complete look you’ll enjoy all winter long.

Repairs

In addition to painting, your estimator may point out repairs that should be fixed before we freeze over for winter. A good once over allows you to seal windows, frames, cracks and any pooling water. Any one of these issues, left to fester all winter, could mean really costly repairs next spring. Avoid the prices by making the repairs now.
