How Often To Paint Inside My House

Posted on November 18, 2019

Painting is quite the large chore, but can still provide exciting results. There are very few people who will admit that they look forward to the chaos and mess a paint job comes with. Most homeowners won’t volunteer for a painting gig when given the option. More often than not, it’s an absolute necessity. But avoiding the issue can cause more damage. This could have you asking how often to paint inside my house?

The answer is there is no answer. It depends on the room, the usage of it and the state of the current paint. Our painters have given us a basic guideline to get started.

Formal Living and Dining Rooms

Formal is usually synonymous with rarely used. These rooms more often are painted for aesthetic reasons rather than necessity. It’s common to wait 5-7 years between painting these rooms, and sometimes even longer.

Master Bedrooms

Bedrooms are the victims of the occasional bump or knock into the wall. They typically remain decent looking for much longer than a child or teen’s room. Expect to paint your master bedroom every 5 years or more.

Children’s Bedrooms

A majority of children’s time is spent in their bedroom, and with that comes messes. Between the crayons on walls and messy spills, painting a child’s room can seem like it’s necessary every other quarter. To prolong the paint you put up, choose a glossy finish. This will withstand scrubbing and extend the life of the paint. If you go this route, you’ll be painting your children’s rooms every 3-4 years.

Kitchen

As the epicenter of your messes, the kitchen walls take quite a beating. Between food and traffic, messes are only natural. Because of this, your kitchen will need more attention than other rooms. Even the most durable paints and protective finishes will still need to be painted every 3 years. Some very vigilant cleaners will be able to go a bit longer.

Bathrooms

Moisture is one mess that cannot be avoided in the bathroom. Humidity and sloppy water users give the walls a true test. A bathroom that is used regularly will need painted at least every 4 years. Paint is your first defense against moisture in the walls. Keep a good film and address signs of wear as soon as you notice them. Otherwise you could be looking at big repairs.
