Deck Staining in Sunnylea

Disappointed with previous re-staining work done on their deck and stairs, a Sunnylea couple recently called CertaPro Painters of Etobicoke to help address the situation.

From an aesthetic standpoint, a solid instead of semi-transparent stain had been used and its colour was off, creating a mismatch with the correctly stained railings and privacy wall. More concerning was the poor surface preparation, which had led to premature coating failure and areas of unsightly bubbling and peeling across much of the deck.

PROCESS:

To restore the deck and stairs to their former glory, the following steps were taken:

  1. Application of wood stain stripper, followed by bristle brush scrubbing and then rinsing.
  2. Careful sanding to remove all remaining areas of the previous stain, using electric floor and palm sanders.
  3. Application of deck wash/brightener, followed by scrubbing and thorough rinsing.
  4. After confirming an acceptable wood moisture level using a digital moisture meter, two coats of semi-transparent water-based stain were applied by brush to board surfaces and ends.

The final product brought a return to visual harmony with the surrounding wood and a reappearance of its beautiful natural grain, with the customers “thrilled with the results”.

The deck was showing signs of stain failure, leaving the wood open to water intrusion and rot.
