Style-wise, garage doors don’t get a lot of love beyond the purchase of the home. When renovating or choosing new color palettes for your house, don’t forget to give some love to the garage doors. They are a large section of the home and should be incorporated, not forgotten. Here are quick and easy garage door updates for instant curb appeal.
Updating your garage doors can be done in conjunction with a house painting or on its own. This is particularly important if you are considering selling your home and want to boost your curb appeal to draw in buyers. A simple addition of paint and hardware can make a huge difference in the look of your house.
Preparation
The easiest and most cost-effective way to update your garage door is with a new coating of paint. To start this task, you’ll need to clean the door first. Use a putty knife to remove any chipping or flaking paint.
For metal garage doors, do not use sandpaper to clean away flakes. You are better off using a household cleaner diluted with water and a soft-bristle brush to clean the door. For wooden doors, use sandpaper or a sander to remove rough patches. Follow it up by cleaning with a degreasing solution.
Once you have cleaned either door type, use a garden hose to clean away any leftover cleaner that is remaining. Allow the door to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Paint Colors
When choosing a paint for your garage door, you have options! Work the colors into the palette you have chosen for the exterior of your home. If you are dealing in colors that have a natural choice for an accent, use that. If your colors are mostly neutral, make a statement with a vivid or dark door. Think colors like bright red, dark blue or cheerful yellow. If your home has a good amount of color, you are not relegated to a white garage door. Use a color that reads as neutral but makes a more strong statement. Good options are gray, beige, black or cream.
Paint the Door
When painting the door, you should use an angled brush to cut in any areas that are difficult to paint. These include the borders of the door, any embossing or crack and crannies that could be missed later.
Next, use a roller or sprayer to apply the paint to the rest of the garage door. For sprayers, make sure you are working with tape and drop cloths to catch overspray. For rollers, use a small nap to avoid too much texture being left behind.
Most likely, this project will take at least two coats and maybe three. Give the paint time to dry in between coatings or you could peel up the new paint you put on it.
Trim
Do not skip updating the trim on your garage door. With a new color right next to it, it’s really easy for the shoddy trim to take away from the door you’ve just painted. Take the extra time to paint the trim and finish the look.
Hardware
Adding new hardware to the door is the finishing touch for this project. If your door had handles or any other hardware on the front of it, get some replacement items for a fully-finished look. You’ll be surprised at the difference between the new door you’ve painted and the old one you had.
