2020 is the year in which people are redefining neutral colors. Everyone accepts colors like white, grey, and beige included in neutral territory, but colors like black, navy, and sage green are being thrown into the mix. The modification of the term has opened up the landscape for risk-takers and those merely looking for something new to take the plunge into new domains. The dark hues provide a sense of comfort as it envelopes home dwellers, creating our own personal sanctuaries to which we can retreat.

“…survey results show that design is moving in a new direction. It’s not just about how colors look in a space, but how they make you feel,” explains Sue Wadden, Director of Color Marketing for Sherwin-Williams. “That’s why I think gray is trending out and moodier hues are trending in—these dark, rich colors envelop us and make us feel cozy, turning our homes into the retreats I think we’re all craving.”

Dark and moody hues have wormed their way into the conversation when it comes to the foundational colors of your home. Greys and whites are commonly known as timeless looks that draw a lot of attention from older generations. As younger generations begin to grow up (currently generation Z), the overriding factor in color choice is often bright colors. However the rich nature of dark greens and blues has caught the eye of the community as whole.

“We think people will always prefer more timeless neutrals. But when it comes to colors that have been unexpectedly popular, we’re definitely seeing a trend toward rich, moody hues.” – Nicole Gibbons of Clare
