How You Can Prepare Your Interior or Exterior For Your Painting Project

Posted on January 18, 2023

Whether you are getting the interior, exterior, or both areas painted, there are some items that you can take care of on your own to ensure that your painting project goes as stress-free and easy as possible. When working with CertaPro Painters® of East Metro Atlanta, we highly recommend that customers do some prep work before we begin painting. This way, our professional painters can handle the actual painting and clean-up once your project is complete.

Here are a few things you can do to prep your interior:

  • Remove any small, fragile objects as well as any wall decorations, drapes, blinds, etc.: If you’re going to get a bookcase or closet painted, you’re going to want to remove all of their contents. When it comes to wall art, you can leave the nails or hooks in the wall if you are going to put your pictures back up in the same spot once the painting is finished. If you’re not going to re-hang them, you’ll want to remove any unwanted nails so that we can fill in the holes during painting.
  • Talk to your project manager about window treatments and switch plates before the painting begins: Discuss with the foreman if you are planning to put back up your window treatments or if you are going to replace them. During the painting process, the painting crew will then know if they should leave the brackets in the wall or if they should be removed and the area where they were spackled. This also applies to light switches, so let your project manager know if you are going to keep the switch plates or are replacing them.
  • Keep any pets out of the workspace: Pets can bump into fresh paint or kick up dirt and grime, which can ruin any trim painting that is done.

At the end of each day, our professional painters will do a surface clean-up of the painting space so that you can re-access your rooms. And at the end of your project, we perform a thorough clean-up. Unfortunately, any spackling or sanding that we perform may kick up some dust. We try our best to clean up these particles when the project is completed, but you still may find more dust than usual after our painting crew leaves. Still, our painting crew tries their best to leave your interior as clean as possible.

When it comes to an exterior painting job, here are a few things you can do to prep:

  • Keep windows and doors closed: Before a paint job, we typically power wash the surface to free it of any dirt and grime. By closing any openings, you can avoid getting the inside of your home soaked.
  • See if any of your bushes and/or shrubs may get in the way: It may be necessary to prune any plants in front of your home so that painters can more easily access any surfaces that will be painted. Also, our painters aren’t allowed to trim your bushes, so it would really help if you trimmed them yourself beforehand!
  • Move your car away from the painting area: Your vehicle shouldn’t be near the work space as it may get in the way of power washing or the actual painting.

Similar to interior painting, our painters will clean up the space daily, removing any tools or ladders that were used during the day.
