Make your Crown Molding Sparkle: Crown Molding Painting for an Easy Update

Posted on March 25, 2019

If you go to the trouble of putting up crown molding, refine the completed look by painting it. But where do you begin your crown molding painting project?

Choose a color and reflectiveness.

This is one of the few times when a high gloss paint is recommended. It will pop on your ceiling and give off a light. Color choice provides you several options too. A dark contrasting color to the ceiling or room can add a nice touch, a complimentary shade to the walls or ceiling is a nice touch too. Try to avoid very dark or bold colors, they will take away from the rest of the room and can become distracting.

Choose appropriate tools.

The best brushes for your crown molding painting are angled sash varnish or enamel brushes. Tapered edges and flagged tips are helpful. They will leave less brush strokes and a smoother, polished finish. It’s easier to get a solid line edge with them too.

Prepare for crown molding painting.

As with any painting project, a smooth surface results in the best finished look. Take time to repair any holes, dents or cracks before you start. A small gouge can really stand out on a ceiling if not corrected before painting. If your molding was previously painted with gloss, sand down the finish for better adhesion. Take a minute to look over the joint between the molding and ceiling. If there are any gaps, fill them with caulk.

Prime and paint.

For the best outcome, using a high quality wood primer is advised. After appropriate dry time, apply your paint. Try to use long strokes to avoid brush marks.
