Deck Staining Tips from the Experts

Posted on April 30, 2019

A deck is a place for people to come together and relax or have fun. If your deck isn’t as beautiful as you would like it be, it’s time to spruce it up with stain.

Many people choose to stain their own deck. While we don’t recommend it, we do have some tips if you’re adamant about taking on the task yourself.

Clean

The very first thing you need to do is clean the deck and make sure it dries completely. This can be difficult if you’re staining the deck during high pollen season. Keep this in mind when you’re thinking about starting.

After you clean and let it dry, it’s time to set up the area.

Painter’s Tape

Use painter’s tape to protect anything you don’t want to stain. Take your time because you’ll be happy you did when you’re done and the stain stays where it is supposed to be – on the deck.

Apply the Stain

You should use a natural bristle brush to apply the stain. You may be tempted to use a roller, but it’s not the best idea. A brush will produce better results because the stain is able to get into the open grain and pores.

One tip from our deck staining experts is to work on several boards at once without spilling over onto adjacent boards. If it does, it could cause blotches.

When to Refinish Your Deck

You should refinish your deck every two to three years. You can save a lot of time and money if you do it as soon as the deck shows signs of wear.

Always use quality deck cleaner. This will keep it looking its best.

Finally, consider using a professional for deck staining. CertaPro Painters® of Columbus-Auburn provides deck staining services and they can make your deck looks brand new. As much as you may want to do it yourself, you know the time and effort you have to put into it may not be worth it, especially when the results may not come out as nicely as you would like them to.
