Outdoor Dining Table Restoration Project in Charlotte NC

SCOPE OF THE WORK:

The project began with a deep cleaning process using chemical agitation and a grease remover to break down built-up oils and contaminants. Once cleaned, the surfaces were sanded thoroughly to remove stains, damaged wood fibers, and any remaining coating.

The picnic-style dining tables were made of tigerwood, a durable hardwood known for it’s striking striped grain patterns. Rather than applying a stain, the team used a high-quality clear coat to maintain the natural look of the tigerwood while adding a protective barrier against grease, moisture, and weather exposure. Two coats were applied to ensure durability and a consistent finish across all tables.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS:

One of the key challenges of the project was the type of material – tigerwood being a dense and unique hardwood, requires careful handling during restoration. Achieving a consistent finish required precise sanding techniques and attention to detail.

Additionally, the restaurant remained operational throughout the project, creating logistical challenges related to foot traffic, scheduling, and drying times. The team carefully staged and blocked off work areas, coordinating around operating hours to minimize disruption while allowing proper curing between coats.

Weather conditions also played a role, particularly for the uncovered tables, requiring flexible scheduling to ensure optimal application conditions.

SPECIAL EQUPMENT & TECHNIQUES:

The restoration process relied on professional sanding equipment, including power sanders and belt sanders, along with careful selection of sandpaper grits throughout each stage of the process.

Skilled craftsmanship was essential to properly prepare the tigerwood surfaces and achieve a smooth, even finish before applying the protective clear coat.
