Painting the Halton Theater in Charlotte, NC
In December 2018, CertaPro Painters® of Charlotte and Matthews, NC was contacted to assist in the painting of Halton Theater. The 1,020 seat theater of Piedmont Community College is located in the Overcash building in uptown Charlotte, NC. It was built in the style of a 19th century opera house, commonly hosting theatre, music, and dance productions as well as prominent speakers and acts. CertaPro’s professionals are well equipped to handle large scale projects, ensuring customer satisfaction and a timely finish no matter the size.
CHALLENGES
Projects of this magnitude have their own set of challenges. Coordination within the CertaPro team and communication with the building’s management are paramount.
The Halton project had to be completed in a very limited period of time during the holiday break. CertaPro Painters® was not allowed to work Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day or when theater business was conducted. There was also no room for the project to go beyond the end date CertaPro was provided. An upcoming major event was the driving force behind the renovation, allowing no modification to the deadline.
CONDITIONS AND INVOLVEMENT:
The project involved painting walls, doors, trim, the proscenium (section of stage in front of the curtain), metal railings, and entry ceilings, along with repairing the holes in the proscenium. About the time the project was completed they decided to add painting to the concrete portions of the theater floor.
In addition to the hole repair and tape removal of the proscenium, the director wasn’t sure what color she wanted the proscenium painted. We applied six different color samples until she found the color she wanted and she was very happy with the final look.
PROJECT TIMELINE – Dec. 2018 – Jan. 2019 (10 painting days)
Absolutely amazing job from start to finish. They were extremely thorough and made sure I got exactly what I wanted. Very fair price as well.

BEFORE PHOTOS
Before the project began, CertaPro’s team took pictures of Halton Theater’s interior, documenting all of the sections they would renovate during operations. This would be an all-encompassing project including the stage, seating, and walls.
Theater Seating
Seating provided an obstacle as walls, ceiling, floor, and the proscenium all required a refinishing
Railing and Theater Trim
The metal railing and trim surrounding the front of the stage was included in the restoration efforts for a uniform look to the interior.
Side Walls
The seating and curtains needed to be meticulously prepped and covered so the side walls could be renovated without any missteps.
Concrete Flooring
The concrete flooring required an update as well to match the contemporary appeal of the other restored sections.
Detailed Proscenium
The 19th century opera house architecture presented a lot of detailed design that needed to be closely scrutinized for a professional finish.
PAINTING THE HALTON THEATER
CertaPro Painters® of Charlotte and Matthews, NC taped and prepped the interior of Halton Theater and began updating the interior. Seats were covered to mitigate accidents and ladders were used to reach high areas inside the theater.
Proscenium Painting
Each side of the stage had vertical sections that were painted using a chosen color by the administration after a color consultation.
Proscenium and Side Walls
The painting was extended outward from the stage to the surrounding walls for an all-encompassing update.
Side Walls and Balcony
The side wall painting included all sections of the interior, stretching up to particular sections of the ceiling.
Ladders Usage for High Sections
Halton Theater had many high areas that required the use of ladders to paint properly and efficiently as the team had a deadline to hit.
THE FINAL RESULT
At the end of the project, CertaPro’s team gathered images of their completed work. Halton Theater was now prepared for major upcoming events. A professionally finished interior matching the vision of the building’s management left them thrilled with the final result.
