Fresh Paint for a Busy Mall Department Store—Without Closing the Floor

In May 2026, CertaPro Painters of Charleston completed a full interior repaint for a major, high-volume department store inside a busy mall. Over three days, crews refreshed walls, doors, fitting rooms, and back-of-house storage areas—while shoppers kept moving and nearly the entire sales floor stayed open.

About the Project

Years of heavy foot traffic had left the store looking tired. Walls and doors showed scuffs and grime, patches blended poorly, and high-wear spaces like fitting rooms and storage closets needed a tougher, cleaner finish. The goal was a durable aesthetic upgrade that would hold up to daily retail use—without stopping sales.

Scope of the Work

The three-day project covered a full interior refresh across customer-facing and support spaces:

  • Sales-floor walls and accent walls
  • Interior doors and frames
  • Fitting rooms
  • Back-of-house storage and corridor areas

Crews used quick-dry, low- and zero-VOC coatings suited to an occupied retail environment, with careful prep so finishes would last through constant cart traffic and customer contact.

Project details

  • Location: Charleston, SC (busy mall department store)
  • Project type: Commercial interior painting
  • Schedule: May 2026 — completed in 3 days
  • Focus: Walls, doors, fitting rooms, and storage areas; durable finishes for high-wear zones

Challenges & Solutions

Working inside an active department store meant tight timing and careful protection:

  • Limited painting windows. Work ran from two hours before open through peak shopping hours, so crews sequenced zones tightly and used quick-dry coatings to keep progress moving.
  • Customers on the floor. Micro-phased zone work kept roughly 95% of the sales floor open and shoppable at all times, with clear safety practices around ladders, tools, and wet surfaces.
  • Protecting clothing and textiles. Merchandise stayed in place. Double-masking, drop cloths, and runners shielded inventory and fixtures while paint went on nearby walls and doors.
  • Department coordination. Painters coordinated with department managers so fixtures, displays, and stock moves lined up with each work zone.
  • High-wear fitting rooms and storage. Durable finishes were specified for doors, frames, and closet areas that take the most daily abuse.
