How to Paint Trim and Crown Molding

Trim and crown molding can really do a lot for a room. They are the decorative feature that add the cherry on top of a well painted room. They elevate your homes aesthetic and make everything look complete. With that being said, it is important for them to be painted well.   1. Choose a Paint Color

This is obvious personal to you and your home. A lot of people go with a stained wood trim or crown molding which gives a natural wood look. Most people choose to paint them neutral colors that blend in with the rest of the room. Another popular choice is to paint the trim a shade slightly darker than the walls.

  1. Choose the Type of Paint

Just like the paint on your walls there are a lot of options when it comes to the type of finish you pick as well. There is durable flat, flat enamel, semi-gloss and high-gloss, eggshell, and satin. Semi-glass and high-gloss are the best finishes for trim and molding.

  1. What type of brush will you use?

Be sure to clean the surfaces before you begin painting so the paint adheres correctly. Next, use canvas drop clothes to cover your floors.

  1. Begin Painting

First, prime. Apply one to two coats of primer using a paintbrush. You can let this dry overnight before continuing. When you are ready to begin painting, apply the paint to one side of the brush. Use long light strokes. Only paint a few feet at a time so you can clean up any drips before they dry.
