Choosing the right color for your home is a decision sometimes made more difficult depending on where you live. In the desert, especially, you may be weary of what kinds of hues work. They need to be best suited for your environment and climate.
There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing paint colors for exteriors in the desert. The sun can be relentless, so you’ll want to make sure to choose colors that will be suitable for so much brightness and won’t absorb too much heat.
White
A tried and true staple, a bright white will set a perfect setting for the cactus greens, sky blues, and sunset purples that surround your desert home. It will also do an excellent job of repelling sunset and deterring heat absorption as the temperature rises.
There are many shades of white, however, and we recommend warmer tones that will reflect light without causing a glare. Off-whites like eggshell and cream will offer a radiant, clean slate. This highlights other colorful and striking features on your property.
Light Yellow
White can sometimes feel too bright for the eyes in the gleaming sun. Light yellow, like white, will repel direct sunlight and prevent it from being absorbed into your home, while adding a little warmth to exteriors in the desert.
Sunshiny shades of yellow will always make your home a warm and inviting one, but be sure to choose tones that are not too aggressive. Opt for soft yellows that offer some brightness without being too overpowering.
Beige
The desert offers a bounty of colors in its landscape, despite it’s false notoriety for being drab and monotonous. And any neutral beiges ranging from grayish to sandy can be the harmonious backdrop for the vivid colors that surround your home.
While keeping in line with the traditional color palette of the Southwest, beiges help ease the intensity of desert life. They don’t become exceedingly bright in the sun, and can stave off heat from being absorbed into your home.
What about trimming?
We recommend certain neutral colors best suited to stand the heat and intense sun of the desert. But you can still add a little life to your exteriors with warmer colors that will pop. You can expand your color palette with the trimming around windows and doors, the fascia board that runs along the lower edge of the roof and the soffits beneath the roof.
Using yellow brownish colors like cinnamon and sienna exclusively for trimming can reflect the rich warmth of the desert without absorbing excess heat. You can further accentuate your home by choosing purples, greens, and reds for trimmings that highlight the historical Southwestern palette.
