The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established the RRP Rule in April 2008, significantly impacting how contractors handle renovation work in older homes. This rule applies to residential properties built before 1978, as well as schools, healthcare facilities, non-profits, and government buildings. Cape Cod has many historic homes and buildings that still stand, following these guidelines is especially important to protect your family, your property, and the environment.

Learn more about how we handle lead remediation safely and in accordance with EPA guidelines below.

1. Lead Paint Identification
Lead paint can be identified by three common methods. Lead test swabs, a lead detector device, or paint chip sampling.

2. Protective Measures
Crew members use respirators and other protective apparel alongside heavy plastic sheeting in the work area to prevent lead from coming into contact with skin.

3. Lead Paint Remediation
Small scale projects only necessitate scraping/sanding. Depending on the project, lead encapsulation paint may also be used.

4. Waste Removal
A HEPA vacuum or similar is common for dust removal. Large paint chips will be transported off-site. Protective suits will also be vacuumed prior to removal for staff safety.

5. Lead Clearance Test
A secondary lead test will be performed after project completion in order to ensure all lead has been removed from the property.

Common Questions About EPA Lead Certified Services
What does EPA Lead certified mean?
An EPA lead certification means that the certified firm has at least one EPA lead certified renovator on staff. A person becomes certified by completing an EPA-accredited training course. Refresher courses are required every five years to maintain certification. For more information see the epa.gov website.
Do I need a lead certified painter?
If your home was built before 1978, or if lead paint has been detected on your home, you should hire an EPA Lead certified painter.
How do I identify lead paint?
Most hardware stores offer paint testing kits that detect if there is lead present on painted surfaces. Home test kits however can only test if there is lead on the surface. Some home inspectors can run more advanced tests to verify.
