Project: In April, 2023, a customer in Eastham, MA came to us to refresh their exterior. This exterior project required several important steps that we followed to get the best possible results. The shingles and trim were in good shape, but there was some rot in pieces of trim along the home’s exterior. We also saw some peeling or flaking on some of the shingles. There was also moss and lichen on the exterior that needed to be cleaned.

Process: To get started, the CertaPro Painters® of Cape Cod team soft-washed the entire house with an eco-friendly product to remove any black stuff, lichen, and moss. We then waited a day or two for the house to dry. Next, we completed all quoted carpentry, which involved the trim mostly. We also nailed in some loose shingles. As we did carpentry, we scraped and sanded off any loose paint or product on the shingles and trim. Any bare wood was spot-primed to ensure proper adhesion for the finished product. We primed bare wood on shingles with a special bonding primer and bare wood on trim with an oil-based primer. As stated before, more sanding than normal had to be done on the shingles due to a product on them. We applied two coats of stain to the shingles. The stain is a water-based, solid stain from Sherwin Williams. We applied one coat of paint to the trim. The paint we used on the trim is a high-build product from Benjamin Moore. High build means it is a thicker paint than the normal paint that is typically used.

The customer had a deck on the rear of the house and plants around the house. When we wash a house with a deck and plants, even with our eco-friendly product, we still have to ensure decks and plants are properly watered down to not damage them.

Result: Overall, this project took 7 days to complete. The home looked beautiful when the project was finished and the owner was very happy with the result. Consider a fresh coat of paint if you are looking to improve your curb appeal while protecting your exterior from the elements.
