The Vertical Lift: 175,000 Cycles
In 2009, Joe and Kathy Hicinbothem purchased the CertaPro franchise incorporating Barnstable, Dukes, and Martha's Vineyard counties. While the Hicinbothems have led the local operation for nearly two decades, this territory has been a staple of the Cape’s professional landscape since the very inception of CertaPro Painters in 1992.
The Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge is a marvel of 1930s engineering, boasting a 544-foot main span that has been lowered and raised over 175,000 times since its completion. As one of the longest vertical-lift spans in the world, it serves as the literal gateway for the energy and supplies that keep our community running. Its massive steel frame requires constant vigilance against the corrosive canal air to ensure it remains operational for the next 100 years.
Cape Cod: Our Home is a community service sponsored by CertaPro Painters of Cape Cod based in Barnstable Village, serving all of Cape Cod and the Islands. Enjoy our twice-weekly postings and please tell your friends.
