Preparing Your Exteriors for the Winter
Posted on August 14, 2020
Despite the kind of unpredictable year we may be having, there’s certainly one thing we can count on: winter will come to Calgary and it will be just as cold as always. Along with the cold, we can also expect plenty of snow and harsh winds, and the possible damage it can cause to our homes. But there is a way to safeguard them from the elements, ensuring their longevity, and saving you time and money.
Why Should I Prepare My Exteriors?
The extreme temperatures and excess water from cold rains, ice, and snow can do quite a number on our exterior siding if it’s not properly protected. Materials like brick or stone, wood, or stucco can be particularly vulnerable if left completely exposed.
All materials have their pros in cons when it comes to what makes them a good option. Some are sturdier, while others are more appealing to the eye, while still others beat out the rest simply for their affordability. Be aware that regardless of which one you choose, they can all be susceptible to water seeping through them. Down the line this can create rot and structural damage that will need repairs and replacements.
Problems with Exteriors in the Winter
Brick and stone are sturdy and can withstand harsh winds, but they are still porous materials and water seeping through them is inevitable. While they are low-maintenance and quite durable, they can also be very expensive materials. So it is in your best interest to provide them with a properly coated barrier from the elements before you need to make expensive repairs.
Wood is perhaps one of the most beautiful siding options, but also the one that could need the most attention. In order to keep it from absorbing excess water and destroying the very foundation of your home, it needs to be maintained and weather-proofed, especially for the extreme weather of the winter.
Similar to brick and stone, stucco is prone to water seeping in because of its porosity. If you have existing cracks in your stucco, it is advisable that you first repair those before they grow wider, and then paint to seal out further moisture during the harsh winter.
Protecting Your Exteriors
Whichever siding your home may have, they can all be vulnerable to the intrusion of water. But the good news is they can all also be protected. With the right knowledge and quality materials, you can protect your home by painting, or staining it in the case of wood. By sealing your home with a moisture repellent coating, you will ensure that it can endure even the worst of winter weather for yet another year.
