This is a heritage home in the Beltline of Calgary. Built in 1928 with original wood siding. It has been many years since the home had been painted and the coatings were peeling and alligatoring (cracking similar in look to an alligators scales).
Due to the age of the home, before starting the project we had the surface tested for lead and it came back positive. Because of this, the customer was left with two options: (1) full lead remediation, or (2) a proper coating system that would cover and protect the home without disturbing the lead on the surface through sanding the existing coatings.
The customer chose the latter and our journey began!
About the Project:
Project Involvement:
The project involved a step of surface preparation of removing the loose and peeling paint prior to a three coat prime and paint process.
The first coating was a high-build peel-bonding primer from Sherwin Williams called PrimeRX. This primer is specifically meant to be used on siding where sanding and scraping may not be an option and will bond the peeling surface and the bare surface tightly and provide a smoother finish.
For the topcoats we used Duration by Sherwin Williams, which is a high quality, long lasting exterior paint system.
Special Challenges:
The biggest challenge was the surface preparation on a surface that tested positive for lead. In normal cases we would scrape and sand the surface to remove the alligatoring and peeling paint, but in this case, the primer technology helped us safely work around the lead and refresh the outside of this home.
Special Techniques:
This is a two-and-a-half story home with not much room between buildings, so reaching the upper level gable peaks proved difficult. With the neighbour’s permission, the crew ended up securing their ladders the neighbouring home and utilizing sprayer extensions to properly coat the hard to reach peaks.
