Fence & Deck Painting & Staining in the Twin Cities Area
Your fence and deck are two of the hardest-working parts on your property, especially when it comes to Minnesota’s weather. Subzero temperatures, heavy snowfall, freeze-thaw cycles, and humid summers put outdoor wood through a level of stress that interiors can’t compare to. CertaPro Painters of South Metro, MN specializes in professional fence and deck painting and staining that protects your outdoor surfaces against the Twin Cities’ climate and keeps them looking their best.
Our Fence & Deck Staining Process
- On-Site Estimate: Every project starts with a no-obligation consultation at your home. One of our local estimators will assess your fence and deck’s size, wood condition, current finish, and your goals for the project. During the estimate, we’ll also walk you through product options, finish choices, and the expected timeline.
- Surface Assessment & Prep: Proper preparation is the foundation of a finish that lasts. We thoroughly clean all surfaces to remove dirt, mildew, algae, and any old failing finish. Depending on the condition of the wood, this may include pressure washing, sanding, and targeted treatments of areas showing early signs of weathering and damage.
- Repairs & Pre-Work: If we identify loose boards, raised grain, popped fasteners, or other surface issues during prep, we address them before a single drop of stain or paint goes on. We also mask and protect adjacent siding, landscaping, and hardscaping.
- Application: Our crew applies your chosen finish using the technique best suited to the surface, paying careful attention for consistent coverage, proper penetration, and clean edges throughout. Multiple coats are applied as needed to meet products specifications and ensure long-term performance.
- Final Walkthrough: When the work is complete, we walk through the project with you to make sure you’re fully satisfied with the results. We’ll also educate you on proper care and maintenance so that you finish holds up through the changing seasons.

We had a small painting project and some painting companies either didn’t respond or show up. Ryan from CertaPro came and gave us an estimate which was very reasonable. Ryan was very communicative about when we could expect the project to begin. Juan and Juan came and did an excellent job! We were very happy and pleased with CertaPro. We are going to have them come back for another painting project we have. We highly recommend CertaPro!

Choosing The Right Finish for Your Fence or Deck
One of the most common questions homeowners have when refreshing a fence or deck is whether to paint or stain. Both are valid options, but they perform differently, look different, and require different levels of on-going maintenance.
Stain: Natural Beauty With Flexible Maintenance
Stain penetrates into the wood rather than sitting on top of it, which means it won’t crack, peel, or blister the way paint can when wood expands and contracts during temperature changes. Transparent and semi-transparent stains preserve the natural look of the wood grain while adding color and UV protection. On the other hand, solid stains offer more uniform coverage while still allowing the texture of the wood to show through. Stain also tends to be easier to maintain over time. When it fades, it does so gradually and evenly, meaning recoating requires less prep work than painting.
For decks, stain is often the preferred choice because of how well it handles wood movement and moisture.
Paint: Maximum Color & Protection
Paint sits on top of the wood surface, creating a thicker, more opaque barrier — a barrier that offers strong protection against moisture and UV damage. Paint also offers a full range of color options and delivers a crisp look that stain can’t match. For fences where bold color or a specific aesthetic is priority, paint is often preferred.
The unfortunate trade-off with paint versus stain is that paint requires more maintenance. Due to wood’s movement, paint is more prone to peelings and chippings, especially on surfaces exposed to standing water and direct sun. When paint fails, it require more thorough prep than re-staining. This all being said, choosing a high-quality exterior paint and properly applying it make the coat hold up longer.
