The unfortunate trade-off with paint versus stain is that paint requires more maintenance. Due to wood’s movement, paint is more prone to peelings and chippings, especially on surfaces exposed to standing water and direct sun. When paint fails, it require more thorough prep than re-staining. This all being said, choosing a high-quality exterior paint and properly applying it make the coat hold up longer.
