The Art of Restoring Historic Front Doors: Our Work at Au Vallon
Posted on September 24, 2025
A front door is more than just an entrance—it’s a first impression, a piece of craftsmanship, and often a slice of history. At Au Vallon, a 150-year-old estate tucked into the heart of Villanova, our team had the privilege of restoring a pair of doors that are as elegant as they are iconic.
This project gave us the opportunity to showcase what we do best: combining old-world respect for wood with modern finishing techniques that protect and preserve beauty for decades to come.
Why Proper Door Refinishing Matters
Unlike interior woodwork, exterior doors endure constant stress—sun, wind, moisture, and fluctuating temperatures. If not protected with the right products and process, the wood dries out, the finish cracks, and the overall look of the home suffers.
A properly restored and varnished door, on the other hand, enhances curb appeal, safeguards the wood beneath, and maintains the architectural integrity of a historic property.
Our Step-by-Step Restoration Process
Restoring a historic front door isn’t a quick job—it’s a process of careful preparation and precision. At Au Vallon, our craftsmen followed these steps:
- Stripping the Old Finish – We removed multiple layers of aged urethane and varnish to reveal the original wood beneath, taking care not to damage the grain.
- Sanding in Stages – Starting with coarse grit, we worked through to 220 grit for a smooth, flawless surface ready to accept new finish.
- Staining (if required) – For doors needing deeper tones, a conditioner and custom stain ensure even, rich color.
- Applying Spar Urethane – Unlike interior varnish, spar urethane is formulated to flex with the wood and resist UV damage. We applied multiple thin coats, sanding lightly between each to achieve a long-lasting, weather-resistant sheen.
The finished doors now glow with depth and warmth, offering both protection and beauty. They complement Au Vallon’s stone façade and serve as a timeless welcome to all who pass through them.
This level of work isn’t just painting—it’s historic restoration, fine varnish work, and preservation of craftsmanship.
