What to Know When You Hire Professional Painters

Posted on April 20, 2021

As a homeowner, you’re not expected to be a painting expert. Avoid overpaying for work or getting a less-than-stellar finish from a handyman who’s no expert by being informed. There are a lot of aspects to consider. Here’s what to know when you hire professional painters.

When you bring a crew into your home, it could be painting employees or contractors. No matter their standing, they will be knowledgeable in painting and providing services you are needing. Either status will be covered by insurances and licensing. By bringing in a crew, the project can be completed quickly with more hands to do the work.

Inclusions

What does a painting contractor do?

The contractors will be the hands on workers in your home. They will work off of an estimate that you were provided to complete work. Typically, you’ll also be provided a copy of this document, usually before work begins, as it includes a full list of repairs, preparation and painting to be included.

What is included with the contractor’s work?

From the to-do list on the estimate, your contractor will begin work. Sometimes specialized crews will be brought in for larger repairs or items the painters can’t complete. Every contract is a bit different, but you should find within it:
Preparation before painting begins.
Removal of fixtures, electrical plates and other items fixed to the walls.
Removal or covering of furniture in the room.
A coat of primer.
Two, or more, coats of paint.
Touch ups on missed spots.
Clean up, including any spills or messes.
Finished product walk through with the crew.

Make sure you have gone through the contract and work to be completed so you understand what will be addressed. Occasionally, underlying damage may be uncovered and need to be added to the list. Reputable crews will make you aware of these changes as soon as they are found. You’ll be be informed of the costs associated with the changes and potential impact on the outcome.

Asking Questions

What should I ask?

Since this is your home, ask any questions that would help you understand the project and work. There are no dumb questions. Our crews and estimators are here to help you feel confident in our work, timeline and expected outcome. Here are some questions to consider:

Does the estimate give a labor and supplies?
What paint will be used?
Are multiple coats expected?
What is the plan for inclement weather?
How long is planned for the job?
Do I need to leave the house for the job? What about my pets?
Are there other costs that could occur?

Costs

How much will this job cost?

Estimates are sometimes a shock to homeowners. Remember, this number is the costs for products, tools and labor for the project. While it can feel high, taking into consideration the extras can make it feel more commensurate with the work. You’ll be getting the expertise of the crew, use of their professional and specialized tools, extra sets of hands and warranties. If you need to reduce costs, consider offering to do some of the preparation work yourself. Things like sanding or removing plates reduce time on site for the crew while it’s easy enough for most homeowners to handle. Remember, sometimes this will void warranties.

When do I pay?

Any reputable company will allow you to pay in installments. Typically, the first portion (up to half) will be due to secure dates, crews and supplies. The remainder is expected when the job is completed. Likely, this is after you’ve seen the completed project and done a walk through with your crew supervisor or customer service representative.
