Posted on March 31, 2021

Before the weather begins to turn, it’s time to protect your wooden decks and porches. With this comes the consideration: do I seal, stain or paint? The outcome you’re looking for and overall look will determine the answer. Our professional crews for deck staining services are here to answer.

The weather is turning, and before you know it we’ll be in the summer heat and humidity. Now is the perfect time to get your deck ready. So should you seal, stain, or paint your deck? It will depend on the look you’re going for, and below we’ll discuss all your options.

It’s important to know that all three protect your deck. They will help prolong the life of the current wood and save money in replacement pieces. No matter what you choose, test the color on a hidden piece of deck that is out of sight. Always follow all manufacturer’s directions for the product you choose.

Stain

If you’re wanting to keep the natural look of your wood, staining is the way to go. Staining allows the color of your wood to be more saturated while allowing the grain to show through. You’ll need to re-treat the wood every so often depending on wear and tear, and weather conditions. Stains last several years with a mid-grade stain and moderate use.

Stain is absorbed into the wood to enhance color. The stain you choose will be permanent, so be sure to choose your stain carefully as you’ll need to commit to it. When the stain soaks into the wood it’s very hard to change it to a different color, and impossible to remove.

Paint

Paints sit on top of the wood and can cover lower quality, or ugly wood grain imperfections. You’ll also be able to choose from so many more color options. Whether you want a more natural or vibrant color, the choices are yours and have no limits. Paint is also able to be sanded and scraped off to allow for repainting in a different color.

Seal

Sealants are a clear coating that sits on top of your wood. Like staining it allows for a natural look, showing off the grain of your wood. It can also lessen the visibility of wear and tear. If you like the natural look of your deck, sealants are a good choice.

Water vs. Oil

It’s important to choose water vs. oil stains at the beginning of this process and stick with it. They cannot be used with each other. Staining with an oil option then trying to use water you will find that the new stain just beads and sits on top of the old. Commit to one and use it through the lifetime of the deck.

Testing

Is your deck due for a new coating? There’s an easy water test you can perform. Sprinkle water drops on the deck. If they bead up, wait a few days and try again. If it now absorbs, it’s time to paint, stain or seal.
