Deck Staining: 3 Things to Know

Posted on July 11, 2022

Deck staining can seem like a daunting task. There is a lot of work that goes into getting a good result. Part of this work is educating yourself on proper preparation and application. While the best way to learn this information is through practice, our professionals are here to provide you with their top 3 things to know. We have painted and stained decks for multiple years and have perfected the practice. Deck staining will be as easy as 1-2-3 with this info in your tool belt!

1. Know the Types of Deck Stain

There are three main types of deck stain to consider for your deck staining process: transparent, semi-transparent, and solid. Each one comes with its own benefits and considerations. Here is the general idea of each of these types of stain:

Transparent Stain: Transparent stain is the best choice if you love the look of your deck and just want to give it a bit of a facelift. These stains give off a more natural, rustic look while also protecting the surface from UV rays and other harsh elements. However, if you choose this stain, you will be able to see any imperfections that are on the surface.

Semi-Transparent Stain: If you’re to change the pigment of the wood while maintaining some of the grain, a solid-transparent stain is the choice for you. This is a popular choice among homeowners. Semi-transparent stains tend to last slightly longer than clear stains and provide stronger protection. However, you can expect to have to reapply a semi-transparent stain.

Solid Stain: Homeowners typically choose solid stains when there are imperfections in the wood or there is a desire to completely change the color. Unlike transparent and semi-transparent stains, solid stains sit on top of the wood rather than soaking into it. One major thing to consider about using a solid stain, though, is that it is nearly impossible to go back. You will also be hiding the natural grain of the wood.

2. Pay Attention to the Weather

Did you know that moisture can be detrimental to your deck staining project? This is why It is best to apply stain when it hasn’t rained for multiple days in a row and there are no predictions of rain in the near future. If you can aim for a low humidity day between 50 and 90 degrees, you’ll be in better shape. This evidently means that deck staining is more difficult in the snowy winter and rainy spring. You may want to hold off on your project for the ideal weather. Otherwise, you’ll be looking for time on the calendar to redo your project. And nobody wants that!

3. Deck Staining Can Improve Curb Appeal

The last thing you should know is simply that a painted or stained deck looks absolutely fantastic. Paint allows the space to look cleaner and gives you a variety of colors to work with, while staining allows you to preserve the original look of the wood. There is something for everyone! If you ever plan on selling your home, a nice-looking deck can make your home value skyrocket. Potential buyers will be able to picture their families out on that deck doing the same great activities you’re doing now.
