3 Tips for a Successful Stucco Paint Job

Posted on April 26, 2021

It is hard to go a day without seeing stucco when you live in California. If you’re one of the majority, your own house likely has a stucco exterior. If that’s the case, this means you also know––or will come to know––that maintaining stucco can be a pain. However, there are a few ways to make stucco upkeep a little easier. Our professionals have compiled our top three tips for a successful stucco paint job.

#1 – Repair and Prepare Before You Paint

Our most important tip actually pertains to what you can do before the paint even arrives. The first thing you’ll want to do is take a good look at what state your stucco is in. Are there any patches or cracks? Is there any peeling going on? Take inventory of everything that isn’t in tip-top shape. You’ll want to repair these before slathering on paint. Otherwise, water will enter your home and lead to more expensive problems.

Once your exterior is repaired enough for a paint job, it is time to bring out the pressure washer. If you did any patching to your surface, you may need to wait 15-30 days before completing this step. Otherwise, you’re good to go. A thorough pressure wash will help the paint adhere to the stucco and fend off maintenance down the road. If you’re going to hire the professionals (see tip #3), they can complete both of these steps for you.

#2 – Do Your Research

Your next step is to hop on your computer and do your research. If you can, look into the details of the stucco currently on your home. What type of texture do you have? When was the stucco applied? Has it been painted before? These things will affect the way you go about painting your stucco. For example, if you have a rougher texture, you’ll need a larger nap on your roller and more paint to cover the area.

Another thing you might want to do at this stage is look into professional stucco painters in your area. Berkeley has some of the country’s most qualified professionals readily available, and painting stucco is not an easy job! A professional can take care of all of the steps listed above and can most likely do it faster and cheaper than you could on your own.
