How to Prepare the Exterior of Your Home for Spring

Posted on February 23, 2020

The cold and dreary winter months will be gone and spring here before we know it. We soon will be welcoming back the fresh outdoor air and plenty of sunshine. The warmer weather approaching means getting your house into its best shape. As the weather allows, begin inspecting your property. Assess for any damage that may have occurred throughout the winter months. The main spots you will want to check are the roof and chimney. You will also want to check the siding, gutter, deck, and windows. Find out just what you need to do from the professionals at CertaPro Painters® of Bartlett.

Roof
In most cases, you won’t need to climb on top of the roof in order to see the damage. Check the shingles to see if any are missing or if they have shifted. Also, see if the nails have pushed any of the shingles up. This will end up causing water to get in and will need to be addressed immediately.

Chimney
See if any bricks have fallen out of the chimney or if anything is growing out of them. These can both be signs that water has gotten in. If you see signs of this, you will need to real-seal the masonry with a water-resistant product you can find at hardware stores. It works by applying a coat, letting it absorb, and then repeating that process a few times.

Exterior
Whether the exterior of your home is made of siding, brick, or stucco, you will need to check for any damage. Water stains may be a sign that your gutters are not functioning properly. Also, check for any insect nests.

Windows
Any cracks around the windows will let out the air-conditioned air, once it gets warm enough to turn it on. Be sure to caulk any cracks or holes that may be on the exterior of the home. You want an especially tight seal around the windows. If you keep finding condensation on the inside of your windows, this is because the seal has been broken and you will need to replace the glass. It is also important to clean the exterior of the windows after the winter weather to keep your house looking its best.

Paint
Any signs of paint bubbling, cracking, or flaking off should be taken seriously. Paint serves as a barrier to the elements and when it fails you can develop all kinds of problems like wood rot and water infiltration. If your paint is showing signs of age consider scheduling a free estimate with the pros at CertaPro of Bartlett, TN. You’ll be glad you did!
